Why secondhand books matter

Books are heavy, paper-intensive things. Publishing runs are guessed in advance, and unsold copies are routinely destroyed. Meanwhile most of us have shelves of books we’ve read once and will never read again.

Passing a book on isn’t just cheaper than buying new — it keeps something useful in circulation instead of in a landfill.

What we encourage

Local collection wherever it’s practical, because a book that travels across town has a far smaller footprint than one crossing the country. Reusing packaging you already have rather than buying new. And honest condition descriptions, so books don’t get returned and shipped twice.

We’d rather say less and mean it than make claims we can’t back up. As retale grows we’ll publish real numbers here rather than estimates.
